The Four Commanderies of Hexi In the thousand-year history of the Silk Road, the Han Dynasty (202 BC - 220 AD) was a glorious and immortal chapter, marking the official origin of the Silk Road. During the Western Han Dynasty, Emperor Wu established four commanderies—Wuwei, Jiuquan, Zhangye, and Dunhuang—west of the upper reaches of the Yellow River, historically known as the "Four Commanderies of Hexi". As recorded in the "Book of Han·Biography of the Western Regions": "Establish four commanderies and occupy two passes." It was a place of confrontation and integration among multiple ethnic groups, a communication hub between the Central Plains and the Western Regions, and an important transportation artery since ancient times.
