Introduction
There is a common assumption that finer carburizer dissolves faster and is therefore better. In a cupola or a deep ladle the opposite is often true: fine material is carried out with the blast or trapped in the slag before it ever reaches the metal. Coarse granules stay where they are put and keep releasing carbon through the whole treatment.
What it is
Graphitized petroleum coke, crushed and screened to a 3-8 mm cut. The coarser fraction dissolves over a longer period, which suits furnaces with a tall bath and a long residence time, and survives the air blast in a cupola where a 1 mm particle would simply leave with the off-gas.
