Introduction
Manganese steel wear parts - crusher jaw plates, hammer heads, mill liners, bucket teeth - are bought for what happens when they are hit, not for how they look when they leave the foundry. That is exactly where the trouble starts: a jaw plate that opens up with gas porosity, or carries an inclusion band just under the skin, will crack or spall long before the manganese has had a chance to work-harden. Our High Manganese Steel Casting Refining Agent is a composite flux added at the ladle to remove hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur from the melt and lift non-metallic inclusions into the slag, so the wear part starts its service life sound.
Why manganese steel castings are hard on the melt
High manganese steel is melted hot, and a hot bath holds more gas in solution. Its chemistry is also sensitive to small inclusions, and because most wear parts are thick and heavy there is time for gas and inclusions to gather before the section freezes. The result is a familiar pattern in thi…
